artifice DESIGN STUDIO
We believe architecture is an act of intelligence and care.
Not a gesture, but a commitment.
What is Artifice in Architecture?
In architecture, artifice refers to the use of skill and technical ingenuity to create deliberate effects, and the conscious manipulation between the natural world and human made construction. It stands in contrast to pure, unadulterated "nature" or "authenticity" and can imply a sense of conscious creation, and sometimes, a degree of illusion
“Architecture, carefully made”
The Story
Artifice is an architectural practice based on the Central Coast of New South Wales, working across residential, mixed-use, and commercial architecture.
Damien Furey — Director
Damien is a registered Architect (NSW# 10769) with over 20 years of experience across residential, commercial, and mixed-use architecture. Since working and graduating in 2007, he has worked within some of Australia’s leading architectural practices, contributing to high-profile projects and playing a key role in the direction and growth of a number of the Central Coast’s most awarded firms.
His portfolio reflects both architectural rigour and leadership, having led design and documentation teams on premium residential projects, commercial high-rise buildings, and complex mixed-use developments in Australia.
Damien brings a depth of design intelligence and technical understanding to every project, ensuring design intent is carried with clarity from concept through to construction.
Damien is the designer of several award-winning projects, including The Pangolin on Newcastle’s Darby Street, recognised for its architectural clarity and contribution to the urban streetscape.
Beyond practice, Damien remains actively engaged in the profession. He has served on several committees (NSW Built Environment Committee and the Regional Committee) and judging panels for the Australian Institute of Architecture awards.
Damien’s work is guided by a belief in the quiet power of well-made things — in materials chosen with intention, in spaces shaped through understanding, and in buildings that earn their place over time. For him, artifice is not only illusion, but knowledge: applied with empathy, discipline, and courage.
His architecture responds to place, climate, and context, favouring honesty, spatial restraint, and purposeful expression. From private homes to complex urban and mixed-use projects, Damien pursues an architecture that carries both presence and intelligence. He values restraint over excess, clarity over noise, and depth over spectacle.
Through Artifice, Damien continues to shape architecture that is felt, not just seen.
